Q: What is red espresso®?

red espresso® is a delicious, full-flavoured espresso made from pure rooibos tea. It is naturally caffeine-free, loaded with antioxidants and layered with a golden crema. It has been specially ground under patent to an espresso grind so that it can be prepared – just like coffee – in a range of coffee appliances. It is the base of a range of delicious red drinks.

Q: Why is it called “red espresso®”?

The name ‘red espresso®’ describes the product itself: “red” refers to the distinctive colour of our espresso made from pure rooibos tea which is also known as red tea. “espresso” describes our new way of enjoying tea as an espresso.

Q: Where does red espresso® come from?

Rooibos only grows in one unique region in the world, in a 110km radius in the Cedarberg Mountains near Cape Town, South Africa, and nowhere else. We are committed to sourcing the best rooibos found there: that which grows at highest altitude on single estates. The red espresso® head office and manufacturing plant are in Paarl, South Africa. All product is manufactured, branded and packaged here.

Q: Is red espresso® decaffeinated?

Q: Why are hot red drinks served with honey and cinnamon?

red espresso® tastes best when served with honey and cinnamon which is why we have developed this as the signature ritual to how best to enjoy our drinks. Honey is also a healthier alternative to sugar which compliments the health properties of red espresso® . And cinnamon has its own health properties and adds an inviting, spicy aroma. See our café-style drinks recipes here.

Q: How many products are there in the red espresso® range?

red espresso® is available in Nespresso-compatible capsules compatible with all Nespresso machines. It is available in single serve soft pod and ground format for espresso machines. It is also available in ground format for use in aeropress, stove-top moka pots, French press and traditional filter machines. We have our own premium wild blossom honey – sourced from the Cape Floral Kingdom and the home of rooibos tea – in a 375ml squeeze bottle and in single-serve, easy-tear 8g sachets. Our red drinks are best enjoyed with honey.

Q: What is rooibos?

Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) is a shrub that grows only in the mountains surrounding the Cedarberg in the Western Cape of South Africa. It was discovered hundreds of years ago by the ancient San who cut its needle-like green leaves and stems and left them to ferment in the sun. Once fermented, the tea, distinctively red in colour, lent the bush’s name to rooibos, meaning ‘red bush’. It is inherently sweet in flavour with earthy undertones. Rooibos has been enjoyed traditionally as a tea by generations of South Africans and, increasingly, by people all over the world. In 2005, red espresso® revolutionized rooibos by turning it into the world’s first tea espresso.

Q: How does red espresso® differ from regular rooibos?

TASTE: Just as coffee espresso is the essence of coffee, red espresso® captures the rich essence of rooibos tea and is ten times stronger in taste than an ordinary cup of rooibos. Ground to a finer, patented cut and prepared for use in espresso appliances that use steam and boiling water under pressure, more of the tea’s flavour is extracted, resulting in a richer, more full-bodied taste.

HEALTH: red espresso® is naturally caffeine-free and loaded with antioxidants. Research has confirmed that red espresso® contains 5 x more antioxidants than green tea and 10 x more antioxidants than regular rooibos (per ORAC measurements). This is because when prepared in appliances that use steam and boiling water under pressure, the health benefits of rooibos are extracted more effectively, including its antioxidants.

QUALITY: Even though rooibos grows only in one unique region, we are committed to sourcing the best rooibos found there – that which grows at highest altitude and is hand-harvested. Only this select rooibos makes the revolutionary red espresso® cut. Only by using this premium quality rooibos can red espresso® deliver on crema, taste and versatility.

COLOUR: red espresso® has a darker, richer red colour than traditionally brewed rooibos. The colour of rooibos in its raw format is also an indication of its flavour: rooibos that is of poorer quality – and grown at lower altitudes – is more yellow in colour and soapy in taste.

TEXTURE: Uniquely ground under patent, red espresso® is remarkably finer in its raw format than regular rooibos tea.

ADDED APPLICATIONS: red espresso® is an espresso product that can be used in a wide range of coffee appliances: Nespresso machines, espresso machines, stovetop espresso makers, French presses and filter machines.

VERSATILITY: There is no limit to the number of deliciously healthy red drinks you can make with red espresso®: from red cappuccinos and red lattes, to fresh red iced teas, chais, hot chocolates, milkshakes and more!

CREMA: red espresso® is characterised by a beautiful golden crema.

PATENT: 100% rooibos tea, red espresso® is refined under global patent to deliver an espresso complete with crema – something which a traditional rooibos tea bag can never deliver on. All our red drink names are registered around the world.

Q: What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are ‘free radical scavengers’ which prevent and repair damage caused by free radicals.

Free radicals are natural by-products of oxidation (when oxygen interacts with certain molecules) in the body. They are also triggered by factors including incorrect diet, pollution, exposure to chemicals, smoking and stress.

They are defined as atoms or groups of atoms with an odd (unpaired) number of electrons, which are highly reactive. They attack healthy cells and start a chain reaction, like dominoes. They are especially dangerous when they interact with important cellular components like DNA or the cell membrane. Cells may function poorly or die if this occurs and such irreversible damage can lead to degenerative diseases like cancer and heart disease.
